Finals!! It's like being hit in the face with a sock full of kittens. On the one hand you think oh boy kittens!! On the other hand, kittens become sharp when placed in a sock, slung around the angry head of fate, and smacked in your face.
Not a perfect analogy I'm sure, but I'm still coming around from too too many late nights. Whew! Anyway moving on, I wanted to post two of my Illustration finals this semester because I enjoyed working on them immensely. They're a little different than my usual work, but these also mark the first time i've successfully gotten my chalk pastels to work with me.
This piece is 16 x 12, drawn on arches cover stock (lovely beautiful paper), and I used Unison chalk pastels, Nupastels, prismacolor colored pencils, and charcoal both black and white. When I sneeze, I sneeze colors.
For some reason I'm tempted to think of this as "Everyday Zen", more than Ordinary Yoga
Unfortunately, while I enjoy the composition, I think its been a bit overworked and ends up looking slightly muddy. There need to be some areas of crispness amongst the softness to create focus, which I think in this case, has been lost.
I'm also a bit weary of the ruddy pink bits on the side. I understand that perhaps you wanted to break the organic greenybrowny theme...but I'm not sure it fits.
I love the detailing of the vines, and I think the detailing on the whole is pleasing, tis just a matter of creating a bit more focus, and simplifying the shading thereby adding some contrast..
I hope this helps!
and now I'd really like a cup of tea
P.S When asking for critique, it would be helpful to know more behind the project. Since it might show motivation of why you did certain things. just a thought
Chalk pastels are one of my favorite mediums to work with, as they can be so incredibly interesting and so many different effects. The light and dark colors brought together in the center, with the radial design behind the girl create an excellent center focus. The colors themselves are vibrant and applied beautifully as to not cause unnecessary smudging, and the ivy on each side of the girl not only creates balance but allows the onlooker's eye to travel down the piece. A deception of symmetry is definitely applied. Her dress is beautifully detailed, especially heading towards the bottom and its ruffles which almost seems realistic because of the shading applied. The cross hatching effect doesn't take away focus from any particular part since its applied to everything and gives it an interesting texture. I highly enjoyed this piece because of the subtle radiance its colors bring, which aren't too bright, shiny, or attention bringing. My only critique would be although the color of her hair accents to the dress and stockings, to me it doesn't appeal the same. A nitpick on my own personal opinion. Its truly lovely, I would love to see more chalk pastel work from you. ^^
